Our School Garden
History
Some years ago, our school, IES Sta. Lucía del Trampal, started a gardening project. A greenhouse was built from a metal frame, wire and discarded PET water bottles, trees and vegetables were planted, and so on. It went fine for a while, but eventually the teacher who coordinated the project left the school. The garden fell into disrepair.
Restoring the Garden
This year, 2019/20, a group of teachers led by our colleague José Luís and including Florentino and myself decided to revive this great project. Quite apart from giving us the opportunity to learn important and useful life skills (such as growing our own food) and developing our understanding of ecology, recycling, and culture, it also makes school life just so much more interesting, so much more fun. Plus, we'll have our own vegetables come harvesting time.
Of course, it's going to be a lot of work -the picture says it all.
Steps
In a first step, we cleaned most of the terrain. It's quite big, so there's still a lot to do. We also dug furrows and are now restoring the greenhouse replacing the 2,000 or so water bottles that make up its roof and walls. And we planted the first vegetables.
We also needed tags to identify what we've planted -after all it's none too easy to distinguish cauliflower from cabbages before they reach a certain stage.
And work is ongoing... check back now and then to see how it's going.
